Mid Session Commentary

Indices edge higher; breadth strong

The headline equity indices were trading with minor gains in early trade. The Nifty traded around the 19,750 mark. Metal, PSU bank and realty shares advanced while media, FMCG and IT shares declined.

At 09:25 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 118.61 points or 0.18% to 66,237.30. The Nifty 50 index gained 33.60 points or 0.17% to 19,750.05.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index added 0.22% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.49%.

The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 1,768 shares rose and 681 shares fell. A total of 93 shares were unchanged.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth Rs 354.35 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs), were net buyers to the tune of Rs 386.28 crore in the Indian equity market on 27 September, provisional data showed.

Stocks in Spotlight:

Aurobindo Pharma rose 0.14%. The company's wholly owned subsidiary, Auro Vaccines has entered into a Licence Agreement with Hilleman Laboratories Singapore Pte. Limited to develop, manufacture and commercialize a pentavalent vaccine candidate used in children vaccination.

Dixon Technologies (India) rose 1.17% after the company's wholly owned subsidiary, Padget Electronics has entered into an Agreement with Xiaomi to carry out manufacturing of smart phones and other related products for Xiaomi. The manufacturing shall take place at Padget's manufacturing facility situated at Noida.

Oberoi Realty added 0.42%. The company has entered into a Development Agreement for development and redevelopment of land admeasuring approximately 13,450 square meters, situate at Tardeo, Mumbai. The company expects to generate a free sale component of around 2.5 lakh square feet (on carpet area) from the development and redevelopment of this land.

NBCC (India) rallied 2.21% after the company has announced sale of Commercial Built-up space in World Trade Centre, New Delhi at Nauroji Nagar through e-auction. The area offered for sale is 14.75 lakh square feet and the value of the area offered is Rs 5,716.43 crore.

Numbers to watch :

The yield on India's 10-year benchmark federal paper added 0.63% to 7.216 from its previous close of 7.171.

In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged higher against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 83.22, compared with its close of 83.2225 during the previous trading session.

MCX Gold futures for 5 October 2023 settlement declined 0.20% to Rs 57,555.

The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.03% to 106.70.

The United States 10-year bond yield slipped 0.54% to 4.606.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for November 2023 settlement advanced 73 cents or 0.76% to $97.28 a barrel.

Global Markets:

Asian stocks are trading mixed after notching some gains on Wednesday as an uptick in Treasury yields and oil prices dented investor sentiment on Wall Street. South Korea's markets are closed for a public holiday.

US stocks finished the day mixed on Wednesday. Investors will watch for economic data on jobless claims, home sales and the GDP on Thursday, before turning attention to the latest personal consumption expenditures price index reading due Friday.
