Mid Session Commentary

Equity benchmarks at the high point of the day; metal shares bounce back

The domestic equity barometers traded with strong gains in early afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 19,650 mark. Metal shares witnessed strong buying demand after recording sell-off in the previous trading session.

At 12:29 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 467.05 points or 0.71% to 65,975.37. The Nifty 50 index added 150.85 points or 0.77% to 19,674.40.

In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 1.28% while the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.57%.

The market breadth was positive. On the BSE, 2290 shares rose, and 1195 shares fell. A total of 168 shares were unchanged.

Derivatives:

The NSE's India VIX, a gauge of the market's expectation of volatility over the near term, slumped 9.30% to 11.63. The Nifty 26 October 2023 futures were trading at 19,717.10, at a discount of 5.55 points as compared with the spot at 19,674.40.

The Nifty option chain for the 26 October 2023 expiry showed maximum Call OI of 23.7 lakh contracts at the 20,000 strike price. Maximum Put OI of 59.5 akh contracts were seen at 19,500 strike price.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty Metal index rose 1.45% to 6,809.20. The index had declined 0.96% to end at 6,712 yesterday.

Hindalco Industries (up 3.67%), Hindustan Copper (up 3.61%), Vedanta (up 3.02%), Jindal Steel & Power (up 2.54%) and National Aluminium Company (up 2.42%) were the top gainers.

Among the other gainers were Hindustan Zinc (up 2.33%), Steel Authority of India (up 2.23%), Jindal Stainless (up 1.93%), NMDC (up 1.73%) and Ratnamani Metals & Tubes (up 1.69%).

Stocks in Spotlight:

Ashok Leyland rose 1.52%. The company announced that it has secured an order for 1,282 fully built buses from Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC).

Godrej Agrovet added 0.95%. The company said that it has entered into a strategic partnership agreement with Sime Darby Plantation Berhad, the world's largest producer of Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO), with a production of 1.887 million MT (as of 31 December 2022).

Greenlam Industries rose 1.03%. The company said that its wholly owned subsidiary, Greenlam South has commenced commercial production of manufacturing facility at Andhra Pradesh with effect from 29 September 2023.

Likhitha Infrastructure gained 1.53%. The company announced that it has received an order worth Rs 155.87 crore from Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL) for laying cross-country pipelines.
