Gift Nifty was slightly lower, Asian markets posted modest gains

Local stock markets are expected to begin on a subdued note today. The Gift Nifty April 2026 futures are trading 0.08 points lower, suggesting a muted to negative start for the benchmark index today. The domestic equity market edged lower in last session, with BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 modestly lower.The BSE Sensex has edged up 0.18% over the last one month, while the NSE Nifty has risen slightly 0.76% over the same period. In Asia today, sentiment was constructive. China’s SSE Composite Index posted modest gains of 0.91% while Japan’s Nikkei 225 ticked up 2.98%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index moved higher 0.03%. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) bought shares worth Rs 2,446 crore, while domestic institutional investors (DIIs) were net sellers to the tune of Rs 936 crore in the Indian equity market on 4 August 2026, provisional data showed. Overnight on Wall Street, stocks edged higher across the board. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up by 907.47 points, or 1.71%, and closed at 54106.88. The S&P 500 edged up 1.77% to end at 7756.60, and the NASDAQ Composite inched higher 2.58% to 26602.99. Yesterday, the S&P BSE Sensex slipped 210.08 points or 0.27% to 78428.95. The Nifty 50 index posted modest losses of 159.40 points or 0.64% to 24614.90. Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Ltd was top gainer in Nifty 50 yesterday, edging up 2.61% to Rs 9050. The stock has posted modest gains of around 1.43% in last one-week and is weaker 10.47% over last one-month. In sectoral indices, only Nifty Media index ended slightly higher yesterday, up 2.03% on the day.
